For anyone curious, the error lies in step three, as the simplification "rule" works for all positive real numbers and, therefore, not complex numbers. Simplifying exponents for complex numbers only holds true if the exponent is an integer; in this case, it is 1/2. However, there may be errors in my argument, so feel free to correct me :)
